Eating Egg Yolk Regularly is As Harmful To The Body As Smoking

A new study suggests eating egg yolks can accelerate heart disease almost as much as smoking.

The study published online in the journal Atherosclerosis found eating egg yolks regularly increases plaque buildup about two-thirds as much as smoking does. Specifically, patients who ate three or more yolks a week showed significantly more plaque than those who ate two or less yolks per week.

It may seem harsh to compare smoking with eating egg yolks, but lead study author Dr. David Spence says researchers needed a way to put it into perspective since both eating cholesterol and smoking increase cardiovascular risks – but the general public believes smoking is far worse for your health.

The issue is with the yolk, not the egg, says Spence, who is also a professor of neurology at the University of Western Ontario’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. “One jumbo chicken egg yolk has about 237 milligrams of cholesterol.”

Keeping a diet low in cholesterol is key, says Spence. Even if you are young and healthy, eating egg yolks can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases later.

"Just because you are 20 doesn’t mean egg yolks aren’t going to cause any trouble down the line,” he says.

For those patients with increased coronary risk, such as diabetics, eating an egg yolk a day can increase coronary risk by two to five-fold, he adds.

Atherosclerosis, also called coronary artery disease, occurs when plaque builds up in the blood vessels leading to the heart, specifically the inner arterial wall, and limits the amount of blood that can pass through.

In the study, researchers looked at 1,231 patients of the vascular prevention clinics at London Health Sciences Centre’s University Hospital, with a mean age of 61.5. Each patient had already experienced a small stroke or had high blood pressure, hypertension or a family history of cardiovascular disease. Spence says researchers chose to use patients with a higher likelihood of cardiovascular issues because it would have been harder to get visible results using the general population with a lower risk.

Patients were asked to fill out questionnaires about their diet, lifestyle and medications, including how much they smoked and the number of egg yolks they ate. An ultrasound was performed to examine their plaque buildup. Researchers took into account sex, cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking, body mass index and diabetes.

In addition to relying completely on the recollection of patients as to what they ate, the study did not account for waist circumference and it did not account for a patient’s exercise program. And perhaps most notably, it only looked at patients with existing cardiovascular issues.

The study confirms what doctors already know about eating cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, says Dr, Gordon Tomaselli, chief of cardiology at John Hopkins University School of Medicine and the former president of the American Heart Association. “Cholesterol intake should be limited to 300 milligrams a day, particularly in people who have underlying heart disease,” he says.

So what can you do to keep your heart healthy?
Talk to your doctor if you have a history of heart disease and consider a change in lifestyle – things like eating better, watching your cholesterol, stopping smoking, and exercising.

Authorities of the University of Ghana are yet to react to the moléstation of a suspected female thief at one of the halls of residence by male students on the dawn of Thursday March 31.

Some male Students of the Mensah Sarbah Hall annex B arrested Amina at about 3:00am for allegedly stealing a laptop and other gadgets belonging to a female student of the mixed hall.

Instead of handing her over to the University police, the students many of whom are males strippéd her nakéd and physically abuséd her and recorded the act.

In the 'nasty video' obtained by Citifmonline.com, Amina could be seen weeping severely as she pleaded with the students to forgive her. But the men without mercy tore her into pieces to expose her nakéd body.

They opened her legs wide and some of the guys could be seen inserting their fingers into her vágina....



The students, after molésting the victim, handed her over to the police who are investigating the incident.

Citi News understands the University authorities are investigating the situation and will come public in the coming days.

The Crimes Officer at the Legon Police command, ASP Basim, who confirmed the incident to Citi News, said the suspect has been on the police wanted list before Thursday’s alleged thievery.

He however condemned the moléstation of Amina.

“She was apprehended and brought to Legon and handed over to the police for investigation so she is in custody. About two months ago, she committed a similar offence and she was arrested and cautioned but because of her circumstance she was granted Court bail to report at the Court. Unfortunately she failed, and the case was presented in her absence and a bench warrant was obtained. So we were looking for her when she committed this recent theft”.

“But if you suspect anybody for committing any offense, the best is to apprehend the person and hand him or her over to the police but not to molést or beat the person up. That will mean taking the law into your own hands” the Crimes Officer lamented.

The lady has not been confirmed to be a student of the University.

    Tonto: Here we go again. I am an actor for Christ sake. And I'm supposed to make my audience believe whatever role I interpret. If any past role I have done has made anyone put a tag on me as Tonto a person, that's their problem to deal with not mine. If they say I got the role because I am drugs why are you calling me? Why don't you call the person who saw me fit enough to interpret the role? My damage is a movie where I interpret the role of someone who got high on drugs. Acting like a drug addict is easy. Please let them say, I am not going to respond to anyone on this issue again.

    Stella: The tattoo of your face on your back was done during the movie shoot in America. Drugs and tattoo sometimes go together. Have you gone for therapy to solve this problem?

    Tonto: I don't understand these questions you are asking. Have you gone to therapy for poke nosing into people's affairs? I am sure you would call it a day job. That's fine. I had my back tattooed because I always wanted to do so and during the movie shoot, we figured we could put the scene into the movie. Like you said, drug and tattoo sometimes go together and we thought it was perfect for the movie.

Still determined to ruin Tonto Tikeh's day, Stella persisted....

    Stella: I will ignore the insult. From the synopsis of the movie, your character did not end up well. Are you not worried that you might end up like this in real life if you continue with the drug abuse?

Tonto kinda ignores this question...

    Tonto: Yes, the character I played ended up with HIV/AIDS and that's a good lesson for people who abuse sex and drugs without protection. The movie is a warning to young people living life on the fast lane because they can afford it. The consequences are very serious and in most cases, the damage done cannot be undone.

    I don't mean to be rude but if someone calls me again attaching a movie role to Tonto as a person, I will not give any response and I won't be nice. It's a pity that people take their eyes off the film and begin to put question mark on the actor's personal life. People should focus on the character and not me.
