Court orders suspension of University of Lagos (UNILAG) name change

Justice Steven Adah of the Federal High in Ikeja yesterday ordered the suspension of the change of name of University of Lagos () to Moshood Abiola University (MAU), pending the hearing and determination of the two suits challenging President Jonathan’s decision to rename the tertiary instution.

The judge in his interim order also asked that status quo be maintained on the issue.

Jonathan, during his democracy day speech on May 29 announced his decision to rename , a move which triggered days of student protests within and outside the tertiary institution.

The alumni association and majority of the tertiary institution’s academic staff condemned the presidents decision.

Justice Adah directed that parties in the two suits must not take any action capable of jeopardising the outcome of the suits pending their hearing and final determination.

Adah reiterated the order in the two suits, one of which was filed by the Alumni Association of the university and the other by the students of the institution.

“No action should be taken to jeopardise the res (subject matter of the suit) pending the hearing and determination of the suit,” Adah said.

The judge gave the order following the requests by the counsel representing the plaintiffs in the two suits, Mr. Afolabi Fashanu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

Fashanu urged the to either give “an interim order” to maintain the status quo or “extract an undertaking” from the defendants to do so.

He said the application for the order was urgent on the basis that the Federal Government was “desperate” to give effect to the presidential pronouncement.

At the proceedings, the two defence counsel, one representing UNILAG and the Governing Council of the university, Prof. Taiwo Osipitan, and the other representing UNILAG Senate, Mrs. Titi Akinlawon, did not oppose the request for the order.

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Bello Adoke, and the National Assembly – the fourth and fifth defendants in the suits – were not represented by any counsel at the proceedings.

The judge adjourned the matter till July 4 for hearing.

The President and Secretary of the Alumni Association of UNILAG, Prof. Olayide Abass and Femi Olatunji, respectively, on behalf of the association, instituted the suit seeking nine reliefs as those contained in the one filed by the students.

Before adjourning the matter the judge directed, the two sets of plaintiffs to harmonise their suits.

Lined up to prosecute the plaintiffs’ case are 14 SANs, among whom are Chief Wole Olanipekun, Chief Kanu Agabi, Alhaji Gani Adetola-Kazeem, Tayo Oyetibo, Chief Bola Ajibola, Roberte Clarke and Prof. Fidelis Oddittah.

The plaintiffs are asking the to declare that the pronouncement of President of Republic of Nigeria in his national broadcast of May 29 changing the name of the university is null and void.

Among other orders being sought by the plaintiffs is one restraining the university and its Council from complying with the President’s broadcast.

NUC Suspends Part-time Programmes in Universities

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor , while briefing newsmen in Abuja on Monday, 25th June, 2012, announced the suspension of part-time programmes run by Nigerian universities. According to him, part- time programmes are being abused by Nigerian universities, and this step was necessary in order to bring them in line with global best practices and standards.

According to the Executive Secretary: “for now, all part-time programmes are suspended, we are going to streamline them. In effect, we should not have more than 20 per cent of the total students’ population on part-time programmes… all part-time programmes must be located on campus, we don’t want satellite campuses again”.

The has good intentions as we will all agree even the full-time students who study and even live on our campuses in Nigerian universities eventually graduate most of the times as half-baked graduates. Yes. One only needs to interact with some of our graduates to see that a lot of them know little or nothing about their professed disciplines. But as is the case with most of our problems, the manner of approach is rather wrong.

Must the Commission suspend the already ongoing programmes? Why can’t the Commission just introduce a quota system for the universities to follow, starting from their next sets of intakes? So that, whoever now flouts this quota system can then be punished as the commission deems fit – even bans will not be too harsh then. As it is now, what purpose does the current suspension serve, other than to leave more youths idle? Or must the programmes be suspended before the universities can be made to close down the satellite campuses? The commission should remember also, while taking whatever decisions they have to take, that these programmes constitute the only shot that so many Nigerian youths have at any form of tertiary education.

CELEBRATE THESE HEROES OF OUR TIME!

Thank you for all your kind words of commendation concerning the impact of the fd@40 project and particularly the building of the school library at Methodist Grammar School II, New Bodija, Ibadan.

I couldn't have done this library project without the help and support of several people in Ibadan, notably the G.Next Team led by Femi and Toni Olumide. Members of the G.Next Team supervised the construction of the library and physically got involved with painting the room themselves. Their passion and enthusiasm reminded me so much of the Mushin Makeover project.

But, the miracle I must testify about came from the halls of Access Bank's School of Banking Excellence whose participants (on a course Visible Impact runs) individually contributed funds that went a long way to help build the library.

If you know any of these people, please take out the time to call or send them a text/bb/tweet to thank them on my behalf and on behalf of the students and staff of Methodist Grammar School II, New Bodija, Ibadan for making the library project happen. These super bankers include:

A SPEECH DELIVERED BY THE PRINCIPAL,
METHODIST GRAMMAR SCHOOL II, NEW BODIJA, IBADAN
AT AN EVENT MARKING THE FORTIETH (40TH) BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY OF
MR. FELA DUROTOYE
(April 14, 2011)

Our distinguished guest, Mr. Fela Durotoye, members of Fela Durotoye’s organization, Exco members of the P.T.A of this great school, Vice Principals and the entire members of staff, students here present, ladies and gentlemen.

Today is an epoch-making day as it marks the presence of a Motivational Speaker in person of Mr. Fela Durotoye in our midst.

On behalf of the entire school and the P.T.A, I sincerely express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Fela Durotoye and his team for their kind gesture towards the development of our school library.

Actually, I had wanted the P.T.A block to be given a facelift but, financially, the school and the P.T.A are not buoyant enough to embark on such a project. So, I resorted to prayer, asking God to send someone or an organization to adopt the school and give us assistance.

In answer to prayer, somebody just walked in from Fela Durotoye, asking if we needed any pressing need in the school; that Fela Durotoye, a Motivational Speaker and a Philanthropist, will be celebrating his 40th Birthday Anniversary and is planning to float forty projects all over the country to mark his birthday. This, I say, is highly commendable.

I had the privilege of listening to a C.D titled "The New Nigeria" produced by Fela Durotoye in collaboration with Gbenga Adenuga. In it, I discovered who Fela Durotoye is. I can describe him as a man that has a great passion for a better, dynamic and egalitarian Nigeria. He is a man that is so concerned about Nigerian youths. He desires a crop of youths that are patriotic, that display a zeal for hardwork, that have a high sense of responsibility and a class of youth that have a proven integrity laced with amiable characteristics, such as honesty, reliability and tolerance.

Fela Durotoye is in one word, aspiring for pragmatic and dependable Nigerian youth. No wonder his clarion call to Nigerian youth is to rise up and make Nigeria a better country. I pray that his dream for a better and stronger Nigeria will be actualized.

Once again, I say thank you to him and his team.

God bless you.
